Syllables
The pronunciation of a Chinese character is a syllable. A syllable can be transcribed in Hanyu Pinyin.
In Hanyu Pinyin Phonetic System, symbols or elements used to transcribe syllables are:
- Initials
- Simple Finals
- Composite/ Compound Finals
- Medials : simple finals i, u, ΓΌ
- Whole Syllables

In Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system, syllables are categorized into 7 types:
- A simple final only (1 segment)
- An Initial + a simple final (2 segments)
- An Initial + a medial + simple final (3 segments)
- A compound final only (1 segment)
- An Initial + a compound final (2 segments)
- An Initial + a medial + a compound final (3 segments)
- A whole syllable (1 segment)
